Suitable areas for oil palm cultivation in Colombia
The Rural Planning Unit (UPRA) identified, within the agricultural frontier, suitable areas for palm oil cultivation, based on physical(soil and climate), environmental and socioeconomic criteria.
5.2 million hectares have high suitability and other 10.8 million hectares have medium suitability for palm oil cultivation.
By the end of 2018, Colombia had 537,176 hectares with palm oil; this is equivalent to 7% of its area dedicated to agriculture and 1.3% of its agricultural frontier.
La Colombie possède un énorme Zero Deforestatrion Agreement for the palm oil chain, under the auspices of the governments of Germany, Norway and the United Kingdom.
Colombia has a significant potential to continue developing its palm oil agro-industry in suitable areas within its agricultural frontier, without causing deforestation or affecting protected areas.
